Striper Fishing Lures, Bucktail Jigs

The bucktail jig has caught freshwater Striper for many years.  Freshwater Striper Anglers should carry an arsenal of jig sizes and styles that will cover multiple of fishing situations and imitate a variety of shad species. Larger bucktail jigs weighing 3/4 to 2 ounces work well in deep water and fast-moving currents. These big bucktail jigs are great imitators of gizzard shad a favored prey item of freshwater Striper. I especially like the Spro Jig style when using large bucktails.  Smaller jigs from ¼-ounce to 1/2oz ounce are great to use in shallow water, and they imitate different types of threadfin shad and glass minnows.

Slow Roll Bucktail Jig

When using jigs in this size range, I tend to favor Ball Head style. Finally, I like to carry a bunch of what I call micro jigs. These are generally 1/8-ounce crappie jigs to be used on light tackle. They imitate really small stuff, such as tiny glass minnows. They are very effective in quiet backwaters and estuaries for smaller predators such as box-fish striper and White Bass1

Striper Fishing Lures-Bucktail Jig Attractor Tails

There is one more essential component to your bucktail jig arsenal, and these are what I call attractor tails!  They are very important to use and put big Striper, Hybrid Striper, and White Bass in the net!   Deer hair on a bucktail oscillates and rolls on the retrieve, you can double the action and effectiveness of your offering by adding an attractor tail.

Soft Plastic Striper Lures

These soft plastic tails are threaded onto the jig’s hook. A popular form of a trailer is the paddle tail worm! I especially like the paddle tail worm on the small jigs under 1 ounce. We recommend the following Bucktail Jigs and Attractor Tails!  For more information follow Striper Fishing Lures.
