Topwater Plugs-Freshwater Striper

Topwater plugs are the most exciting way to catch Freshwater Striper!  Our favorite time of the year is September and the Hot Spot is Lake Texoma, the Striper Fishing Lure is the topwater plug!  The topwater plug season is not exclusive to Texoma!  Most area North Texas Lakes have great topwater action in September and October, but Texoma’s season is famous!  If you like throwing 6-inch Pencil Poppers up on the sandy shore and having a 10-pound Striper blow it up, Texoma is your place!  Check out the video below from Lake Texoma Fishing Guide JD Lyle.  A great morning September 2013 throwing topwater plugs and catching big Striper!

Striper Lures Freshwater-Glide Baits

The most popular Striper Fishing Lures on Lake Texoma is the Heddon Super Spook Bone Color!  The Super Spook is a glide topwater plug or a walk the dog style bait.  The Glide Baits are a slower moving topwater plug that doesn’t move a lot of water.  At times Striper will key in on a less obtrusive topwater plug.  We like to remove the middle treble hook, cut off one of the front treble hook barbs, and replace the rear treble hook with a single saltwater hook.  We find three very sharp treble hooks are difficult to get out of a Striped Bass and often wind up in the angler’s hand.

Topwater Plugs-Chug Baits

Chugging topwater plugs are made to move water and make a big noise to attract Striper!  The most popular model is the Storm Chug Bug!  Striper Anglers will use the 4 3/8″ model in bone and chartreuse.  This bait is made to move water and make a popping or chugging sound on the retrieve.  This bait can be fished slow or fast.  Notice the rear dressed treble hook, this will increase your catch rate when Striper get selective!

Topwater Plugs-Pencil Popper

The number one Topwater Plug for Striper in Texas is Cotton Cordell Pencil Poppers.  This plug is a hybrid of a glide bait and chugging bait.  The Pencil Popper is a big boy bait and it catches huge Striper.  The plug rests down in the water and then glides when the angler retrieves the lure.  A must have topwater plug for Lake Texoma!

Topwater Plugs-Don’t Overthink!

Our old saying is, ” it’s not Rocket-Surgery, It’s Striper Fishing!”  If you like to throw chartreuse, then do so!  If you are more confident is bone color, please throw it!  Fussing over topwater lure color is a waste of time!  You must match the hatch with topwater lures.  If you see 3-4-inch shad, don’t throw a 7″ Pencil Popper!  Make sure you have some topwater lures in several sizes.  3-inch, 5-inch, and 7-inch will cover most Striper fishing situations.  For more information follow Striper Fishing Lures.
