Alabama Rig-Striper Lures Freshwater

We always like to start off our Alabama Rig chat with the best article ever written about this Striper Fishing Lure!  Please follow New York Times Author James Card, 12-2-14,  A Fishing Lure So Effective, It Catches Criticism, for more information! “The device is composed of five wires angled like spokes of an umbrella, with fishing lures attached to each end. It mimics a school of baitfish, and striped bass, walleye, largemouth bass, and northern pike apparently cannot stay away from it. Its inventor, Andy Poss, dreamed up the device, which he called the Alabama Rig while watching a tuna chasing a school of sardines on “The Blue Planet,” a BBC documentary series. In July 2011, he built his first prototype by hand in his garage in Muscle Shoals, Ala., and he spent nearly 17 months perfecting it. In essence, he has built a better mousetrap, and he is rightly proud of it.

TOO Good?

But that is the problem: The Alabama Rig is too good. It was banned by the organizers of the United States’ two major bass fishing competitions, BASS (in 2012) and F.L.W. Outdoors (this year). In October, BASS extended the ban to all of its events, including its amateur series, college tournaments and regional club-level events. So the Alabama Rig, the first artificial lure to be banned from competitive angling, and other umbrella lures have joined the same outlaw company as spitballs in baseball, square-grooved clubs in golf and the Speedo LZR Racer suit in swimming.”

Striper Fishing Lures, The Alabama Rig

The Alabama Rig could be the best Striper Fishing Lure on planet Earth!  It is very simple, the Striper Lure catches fish!  You can throw the Alabama Rig year-round on Lake Texoma, Lake Tawakoni, or Lake Lavon and catch White Bass, Striper, and Hybrid Striper!  We are not a fan of having 5 hooks on a lure and having to un-hook two striped bass!  We do like the flash of 4 blades and one swimbait to catch Huge Striper!  Our favorite Alabama Rig is the Booyah Boo Rig!

Blades are Better on Your Alabama Rig

Once you build the better mousetrap and the best Striper Fishing Lure, watch every lure manufacturing company release their version!  Shopping for Alabama Rigs will make your wallet and head hurt!   You can find all kinds of variations with many different bells and whistles, but we stick with two models!  We already mentioned the Booyah Boo Rig, but most Striper Anglers will fish the Yum Yumbrella Flash Mob Jr.  The willow blades on an A-Rig create a lot of flash and draw the attention of Striper, White Bass, and Hybrid Striper!  A-Rigs with blades look like a ball of bait and induce reaction strikes!

A-Rig Wrecks-Striped Bass

Please, note you will catch two to three Striper at a time with an A-Rig loaded with 5 jig heads and swimbaits.  Catching two 5 pound striper on a 5 arm A-Rig with 5 very sharp hooks is a crazy Rodeo during the release.  Your A-Rig will get destroyed and you could get a sharp hook in the hand!  We prefer catching one Striper at a time with the Booyah Boo Rig.

Jig Heads For Alabama Rigs

We always tell Striper Anglers you spend $ 40,000 for a boat, don’t try to save money on your jig heads!  The most important part of your fishing trip will be the hook and the knot you tie!  If the hook is not black, put it back!  If you are gonna fish the Alabama rig with five jig heads, you need to carry a variety of weights.  We like to use the following jig head weights.

Five Arm A-Rig Weight

1/8oz (Five 1/8oz jig heads = 0.63oz plus 0.44oz of A-Rig with Blades plus 5 swimbaits 0.35oz = Total Rig Weight 1.4oz)
1/4oz (Five 1/4oz jig heads = 1.25oz plus 0.44oz of A-Rig with Blades plus 5 swimbaits 0.35oz = Total Rig Weight 2.0oz)
3/8oz (Five 3/8oz jig heads = 1.88oz plus 0.44oz of A-Rig with Blades plus 5 swimbaits 0.35oz = Total Rig Weight 2.6oz)

We don’t like throwing 2.6oz of fishing lures all day on Lake Texoma so we use the Booyah Boo Rig in the following weights

1/4oz with a 1/8oz Jig Head
1/4oz with a 1/4oz Jig Head
1/2oz with a 1/2oz Jig Head
1/2oz with a 3/4oz Jig Head
