Modifying Striper Fishing Lures on Lake Texoma will put more and bigger fish in the net! Lake Texoma is the Striper Capital of the World! If you did not know that, visit the lake on a summer weekend and count the guide boats! We get a lot of fishing pressure on Lake Texoma and at times the Striped Bass get lock-jaw! Here are some Striper Lure Modifications I like to make to help clients put more fish in the net!
Add 3D eyes to your Swimbait Jig Heads
Modifying Striper Fishing Lures-Swimbait Jig Heads
Lake Texoma has a very healthy population of Threadfin and Gizzard Shad! When fishing gets tough, I find adding some 3D eyes to my jig heads helps! Make the eyes as big as possible! Most anglers are throwing 1/2oz, 3/4oz, and 1oz striper swimbait jig heads on Lake Texoma. You will have two basic styles of jig heads, with and without an eye socket. I modify them differently!
Modifying Striper Fishing Lures-Add 3D Eyes and Superglue
A flat surface or a bump eye swimbait jig head, I take some fine grain sandpaper and file down the bump and rough up the surface. A rough surface will hold a 3D stick-on eye better! I like a 3D 9mm eye on all of my 3/4oz to 1oz swimbait jig heads, and move to a 5mm eye on 1/2oz and 1/4oz! USE SUPER GLUE GEL! Make sure the super glue is a gel, it sets up better on jig heads! I like a brush applicator as well and the thicker gel! It’s not rocket science, so put some glue on each side of the jig head and stick the 3D eyes on carefully and let them dry overnight! Make sure you give the superglue time to dry 100%! I like to hang the swimbait jig heads so both sides dry.

Modifying Striper Fishing Lures-Stick-on Eyes and UV Glue
Just getting started with UV Glue, but I like it a lot! The glue is kind of expensive, but the 2D stick-on eyes do not come off! You need a jig head with a recessed eye-cavity like the picture below! If the cavity takes a 4mm eye, buy a 3.5mm or 3mm size. I use the Loon UV Thin because it covers the stick-on eye fast. Take your stick-on eye and place it in the cavity. Carefully put enough Loon Thin in the cavity to fill it up to a slight bubble. Hit the Glue with a Loon UV light for 30 seconds and do the other eye. The UV Glue gives your jig head a 3D look and lasts much longer than super glued eyes!
2D Stick-on eyes and UV Glue are great modifications to jig heads.
Molded eye cavity jig heads are great to modify for Striper!
Dressed Treble Hooks catch more Striped Bass on Lake Texoma! I like to use Mylar Tubing and kevlar tying thread on all my Slab Spoon hooks! Make sure you use some kind of resin to finish the thread on the treble hook! You can use Super Glue, UV Glue, or Clear Finger Polish! Make sure you let these hooks dry overnight!
Modifying Striper Fishing Lures-Mylar Treble Hooks
Most Striper Anglers will use feathers to dress their treble hooks. Nothing wrong with feathers if you catch 2-3 fish per day? If you catch 20-30 Striper in one trip, you can say goodbye to feathers on your treble hook after the 3rd fish! You will need the following materials to dress your treble hooks:
- Kevlar Tying Thread
- Tying Bobbin
- Tying Vise
- Mylar Tubing
- Treble Hooks
- Clear Finger Nail Polish
You will get the hang of tying dressed hooks the more you make! You can use Mylar on all hooks, not just trebles. I use Mylar because it will last for weeks! Here is a video that Mike Oser made a few years ago!
I love to fish big flutter spoons in the summer for Striper on Lake Texoma! If you have ever tried to cast a big flutter spoon, it’s like casting a tennis shoe! We have a simple modification that helps anglers cast and vertically jig big spoons!
Modifying Striper Fishing Lures-Big Flutter Spoons
This one is very easy, but it makes Big Spoon Fishing easy for neophyte Striper Anglers! Simply take a bass casting sinker and put it on your hook split-ring. I use the following sizes of bass casting sinkers:
- 1/8oz Bass Casting Sinker
- 3/16oz Bass Casting Sinker
- 1/4oz Bass Casting Sinker
- 1/2oz Bass Casting Sinker
If we are fishing deep water (20-35 feet) I will add a 1/2oz sinker to my Flutter Spoon and vertically jig fish! I will use lighter sinkers to influence the fall rate. I also like to add a stainless steel single hook too! Mylar Tubing on the single hook will increase hook ups!
